We're Just Squids is a short text-based game of thoughts.

You can press many buttons. The main button is the left mouse button. It should help you start the game and get you going!

The game is just a short reflection of random thoughts that are all scattered over the place with a meaning that you can delve into yourself.

I just wanted to make a game where the player reflects on themselves and takes a miniature step-back and looks at themselves to just kinda, y'know, think.

You can quit the game using the "q" button.

Really good stuff. I liked the meta-ness of the squid in acknowledging the environment and how you dived into the deeper topics - an unexpected but pleasant surprise. Good work visually with the words being typed out as well.

For a game called we're just squids it got surprisingly philosophical which I was not expecting.

Was also not expecting the philosophical angle. From the title alone I expected Splatoon references. Instead I got hit with the self-reflection time out. Kind of wild how one day, this itch.io page and these comments will be viewed for the last time. I hope the final viewer is someone cool and pretty.

The narrative gives me the feeling like its a guiding for an RPG game where we have the adventure with the squid teammate. kind of sad for leaving the squid.

I felt like I was playing a nintendo game with the text popping up with sound. The narrative was very fun and interesting too, great stuff!

Game's narrator seems to be the only one speaking, but that game really does succeed at making the player think, as you've intended.

why do I feel sad after? :( great work on the game!!

Lowkey same. It was very philosophical. Great combination of humor and seriousness to get you invested in going along with your new squid friend!

Felt like one of those stream-of-consciousness novels where your thoughts just take you along for the ride! I really liked the animated text and the sound effects too! Adds to the juiciness of the game definitely!

I love how there is so much dialogue. I was really interested in the squid haha I didn't want it to end

The scroll text with the sound reminds me a lot of Undertale (and other games with this feature, of course, but the font with the vibe of the game really gives Undertale). I love the creative ways you introduce button features: lots of opportunities for various easter eggs, there :)

Yeah! I think some easter eggs would be a great addition to this game. Having something to do to entertain the squid would be awesome, even if it’s only temporary.

I really want to learn how you did the typing effect along with the text sound. It’s such a fun effect for these old retro style games. I am sad I won’t be able to talk to my squid friend again though. He seems so lonely. :((

Same here when I was playing the game. I wonder how he does the typing sound and set the typing visual when text appear slowly to guide the reader.

I used coroutines to create the text appear slowly. It's kind of a way to make Unity do something over time. The sound was just a part of that coroutine and if you skipped it then I made sure the sound would cut.

I really like the coroutine text style you used and the retro sound you picked to accompany it. As someone that thinks about space, pretty much constantly, I very much relate to this squid and I was happy to be trapped in his "nothing world" for a few minutes.

Metoo, I've been trying to press "Q" to see if it makes a difference, it's so funny.

Like how the background is just white on blue, going back to the squid questioning what space is. The game is a space for the squids thoughts. Like how the squid asks if we are all squids, maybe we all have a white box for our thoughts.

I like the scrolling text with the arcade-style sound effects. The text feels very personal as you listen to the squid’s inner monologue.
